Congressman Joe Wilson...Be Gone!

My mouth literally fell open last night during President Obama's Healthcare speech to the United States Congress and the american people.

In the middle of one of the most serious and morally imperative issues to face our country; providing affordable healthcare to all...a heckler yelled out to the President.

I had to rewind the DVR! I immediately thought that someone had breached security and got into the House chamber...and then I saw Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi's face...and I knew.

It wasn't a random idiot, it was an elected idiot.

It was Representative Joe Wilson, a Republican member of Congress from South Carolina who actually yelled out "you lie" to the President of the United States in the most formal setting there could be; an address to the Capital!

You could have knocked me over with a feather. After the initial shock...I got mad.

Enough with accepting ill mannered and rude behavior from people who fail to at least show RESPECT to the Office of The President of the United States.

I have been honored to meet every living president as well as late presidents Ronald Reagan and Gerald Ford and regardless of my political leanings...I spoke to them with reverence and respect. One of the greatest moments of my life was having the honor of speaking on a panel with Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia; and you know I don't agree with anything he has ever said or done when it comes to the law. I treated him with reverence and respect even though I disagreed with his position and his point of view. Let me state emphatically that I did not agree with 99% of the policies of President George W. Bush, but the thought of yelling out at him while he was speaking to Congress and the nation would never even cross my mind; or the mind of anyone not raised by wolves.

We in America have free speech, but we should also have the common sense to use our speech to change, influence and transform not to inflame, insult and offend.

Politicians from both sides of the aisle immediately called for Congressman Wilson to apologize; and he did. Apparently the White House has accepted the apology, good for them...but that is not good enough for me.

The Congressman didn't just insult the President...he insulted the Presidency; and that belongs to me. That is my institution and I don't accept the apology. Republican Congressman Joe Wilson (2nd District of South Carolina) needs to go. In the words of the fictional character Miranda Priestly from The Devil Wears Prada: "That's All."

I have put my money where my mouth is by already sending my contribution to his opponent, Rob Miller. To quote the President, "the time for bickering is over...the time for games has passed." Healthcare reform is far too important to allow the "silly season" to derail the debate.

If we were living in the land of "Twitter," he'd be BLOCKED. This is the next best thing until we can figure out how to do that in real life.

  1. And what saddens me further is that Ellen Degeneres (whom I love - this is not about her) is getting more news coverage this morning than Mr. Wilson's behavior last night. Residents of South Carolina should be calling for his resignation. An apology is not enough.

  2. I don't think an apology is enough. He should be thrown out on is arse. If we were in another country where there is dictatorship he wouldn't be living to tell about it because he'd put to death immediately.

  3. Star, that was so offensive to me and Im sure many others. Not only am I boycotting fox news for not airing our President's address. Is'nt that socialism? I also felt the need to personally contact the congress man's office this morning. I said his vile attempt at dialog was stomach turning. It rivaled Cheney saying F'you on the senate floor. certainley the opposition dont mind trampeling on the reverence of the office of the President. Im ashamed.

  4. Star, I want this blog entry copied everywhere. What was that riducoulosity? An apology...what does that mean. Was his apology yelled out to the millions of Americans and other individuals watching the speech? I can only ACCEPT his resignation.

  5. I was shocked and outraged by this. He did his constituents a major disservice by his actions, and this IS the state that kept Strom Thurmond in office all of those years, so that is saying something.

  6. Mr. Wilson, while inappropriate, told the truth Star. Obama was lying last night. Don't you remember when Pres Bush got heckled by the Dems when he spoke in the very same chamber?? Where was your outrange then?

  7. Health care is an important issue and the opponents all need to listen and put aside the agenda to see the President fail. Mr. Wilson's behavior was completely unacceptable and if this Congressman cannot show more restraint in such a setting then perhaps he needs to allow someone else who can demonstrate the role of a leader - one who knows how and when to act up. It is obvious that there are many people who cannot stand to see Barack Obama in the role of the President and they have cried about wanting their country back as if it left, they prayed for his death, they have made threats, they spread lies and on and on...... America the world is watching and they can see right through you!

  8. Thanks for this post Soror. I plan to quote you in my blog if that is ok? I agree he needs to go, but I am not convinced he will.

Folks have so much hate that they will disregard any decorum to "take the president down"...sad days in this country!

  9. Well said, sista. Very well said.

Also, thanks for the post about healthcare. I just found your blog yesterday via @UncleRUSH.

  10. As always Star, BEAUTIFULLY said!

  11. He's continuing his media blitz, emphatically stating that the president "lied about illegals." He's wrong. He's disrespectful. He needs to go. It's not enough to sit in anger; we have to put our money where our mouths are. Donating to Rob Miller is our only chance to get buffoons like this out of elected office.
