Wonderful Wednesday: Focus on Friendship

Friendship: Seven Tips for Making New Friends.

Ancient philosophers and scientists agree: strong social ties are the KEY to happiness. You need close, long-term relationships; you need to be able to confide in others; you need to belong; you need to get and give support. Studies show that if you have five or more friends with whom to discuss an important matter you’re far more likely to describe yourself as “very happy.”

Not only does having strong relationships make it far more likely that you take joy in life, but studies show that it also lengthens life (incredibly, even more than stopping smoking), boosts immunity, and cuts the risk of depression.

“Okay, okay,” you’re thinking, “I get it -- but it’s not that easy to make new friends.” Here are some strategies to try, if you’re eager to make friends but are finding it tough:

  1. Show up. Just as Woody Allen said that “Eighty percent of success is showing up,” a big part of friendship is showing up. Whenever you have the chance to see other people, take it. Go to the party. Stop by someone’s desk. Make the effort.  Also, the mere exposure effect describes the fact that repeated exposure makes you like someone better – and makes that person like you better, too. You’re much more likely to become friends with someone if you see him or her often.
  2. Join a group. Being part of a natural group, where you have common interests and are brought together automatically, is the easiest way to make friends: starting a new job, taking a class, having a baby, joining a congregation, or moving to a new neighborhood are great opportunities to join a group. If those situations aren’t an option, try to find a different group to join. Get a dog, for example. Or pursue a hobby more seriously. An added advantage to making friends through a group is that you can strengthen your friendships to several people at once -- very helpful if you don't have a lot of free time.
  3. Form a group. If you can’t find an existing group to join, start a group based around something that interests you. My “Dinner with the Girls” group meetings are among the top joys of my life. Studies show that each common interest between people boosts the chances of a lasting relationship, and also brings about a 2% increase in life satisfaction. Movies, wine, cheese, pets, marathon-training, a language, a worthy cause…I know people in all these sorts of groups.
  4. Say nice things about other people. It’s a kind way to behave; also, studies show that because of the psychological phenomenon of spontaneous trait transference, people unintentionally transfer to you the traits you ascribe to other people. So if you tell Janet that Jackie is arrogant, unconsciously Janet associates that quality with you. On the other hand, if you say that Jackie is hilarious, you’ll be linked to that quality.
  5. Set a target. This strategy sounds very calculating, but it has really worked for me. When I enter a situation where I meet a new set of people, I set myself the goal of making one new friend. This seems artificial, but somehow, this shift makes me behave differently, it makes me more open to people, it prompts me to make the effort to say more than a perfunctory hello.
  6. Make an effort to smile. Big surprise, studies show that the amount of time you smile during a conversation has a direct effect on how friendly you’re perceived to be.
  7. Make friends with friends-of-friends. Good people know good people.  As my mother always says:  “Water seeks its own level,” so friends-of-friends is an excellent place to start if you’re trying to expand your circle.

Wonderful Wednesday...Enjoying Life

-Mother Teresa

I don't know what has gotten into me recently.  For the past few weeks, I have been waking up every single morning excited and happy about life.  I've been smiling more, laughing more, sharing more and giving more.  I really think it has to do with "getting out of my own way" and asking myself two things:  what can I do for someone else today to improve their lives because "giving is the price we pay for living" and what can I do for myself...because I can't truly love anyone until I love myself.

It really is easy to do.  Just start with one thing and watch the change in your life.  Here are five doable things that you can start with; just pick one:
  1. Sign up as a volunteer at a Domestic Violence Shelter.
  2. Start a Senior Citizen book club at a local nursing home.
  3. Serve food at a homeless shelter.
  4. Buy a bag of fresh fruit and vegetables and leave it at the home of the single mother with four kids on your block.
  5. Perform a random act of kindness for a stranger.

Remember not to leave yourself out because

“A healthy self-love means we have no compulsion to justify to ourselves or others why we take vacations, why we sleep late, why we buy new shoes, why we spoil ourselves from time to time. We feel comfortable doing things which add quality and beauty to life.”
-Andrew Matthews

So this is for you...
  1. Take a long bath...with bubbles (in the tub and in the glass you take to the tub).
  2. Buy some sexy undies and wear them when you don't have a date.
  3. Smile at a stranger on the bus, subway, in the grocery story or on the elevator.
  4. Learn how to make a something decadent like homemade pound cake, white sangria or sauteed soft-shelled crabs...for yourself.
  5. Take a tango class so you get "dipped" at least once in your life.
It's about living everyday people...living your life "like it's GOLDEN!"

Have a WONDERFUL week!

Wonderful Wednesday...a celebration of Education!

I've said it before and I'll say it again:  A COLLEGE DEGREE is the ultimate "trump" card in life. Nothing I will ever do or accomplish will compare to the accomplishment of graduating from college and law school.  These degrees have been the foundation of EVERY job, EVERY opportunity and EVERY backup plan in my life.  I would never have succeeded without having education in my life.

The New York Times
today is giving that same opportunity to a dozen young NY scholars who have excelled in academics as students and shown true character as human beings.  This celebration of education is what is "wonderful" in my life today. The scholars were chosen by a panel of editors, reporters and educational consultants and they reflect the varied demographic landscape of New York City. Six are immigrants: from Russia, Ghana, Nigeria, Vietnam, China and Guyana. Three are the children of immigrants: from the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Israel.  These kids will now get to go to college; which will change their lives.  Each scholar will receive $30,000 in aid for college, a laptop computer and a summer job at The Times, as well as access to a network of counselors and alumni who can provide advice and support in the years ahead.

As the NY Times says, "Their stories are diverse, but almost all share a common thread: a parent at home who stressed to the students from an early age that education was the best way out of tough circumstances."

Bless you NY Times for celebrating these wonderful young people who have rejected the "box" the world might want to put them in because of their circumstances.  They are shining through learning and WE as a society will reap the benefit in years to come.

Wonderful Wednesday

This is a Wonderful Day!

I admit to some anxiety today with me on The Oprah Show sharing about the most painful struggle of my life...losing 160 pounds physically and emotionally.  So of course what does this confident 47 year old woman do?  She calls her mother.  My mother has a way of making everything seem alright; and she didn't disappoint today.

It seems today is a big day for our family all around.  My mom told me that my 8 year old nephew Tyson has a project due in school and he has to make an oral presentation to the class about it today. The assignment was to pick a famous person who inspires you.  My family takes education seriously, so of course my father, "Pop Pop", my mother "Nana" and of course my sister, brother-in-law and older nephew Terrell all weighed in on who should be Tyson's choice. According to my mother, she suggested Rosa Parks.  I'm not sure who the rest of the family suggested; but Tyson had his own ideas.  Mom said Tyson's response was clear.  "Nana, " he said, "the assignment is to highlight my favorite famous person...and that is my Auntie Star."

Yep...I cried this morning.  I am thrilled and honored to tell my story on Oprah this afternoon, but I realized at that moment listening to my mother that I didn't need to seek approval or respect or understanding from anyone.  I already have it from the people who love me the most.

So this is a wonderful day for me.  Not because I'm going to share a couch with my favorite famous person; but because a child that I love with all my heart says that I'm his.  It doesn't get any better than that!

Wonderful Wednesday

My newest god-daughter Olivia Phillips Tavarez is what is "wonderful" in my life this week.

She is the baby daughter of one of my best friends, Dr. Holly Phillips and her husband Jose. When they asked me to be her godmother, they said that they knew she would be "safe" if she had me in her life.

What an amazing gift to give someone.  We claim to be friends with soooo many people, but only a true friend trusts you with their most precious asset; their child.  I know that I'll never have to step in because Holly and Jose will be there for "Liverwurst" for as long as she needs them; but I'll be there just in case.  I'll take her for her first manicure, give her her first book, take 100 photos at her first dance recital, share the secret of her first kiss, cheer when she graduates from law school (or med school...or B school) and cry when she marries the man of her dreams. I'll be there for her as her mentor, her friend and her godmother.

Thank you Holly and Jose for this "wonderful" honor.
